I’ve always loved playing with blocks. As a child, it was one of my favorite toys. As a teacher – I enjoyed them even more. In my early years of teaching, I was introduced to a variety of new blocks that were not around when I was a little girl. Foam, magnetic, mega blocks, giant lego blocks, cardboard blocks that look like bricks, and the list goes on. My personal favorites are the magnetic blocks which were introduced to me by our Japanese students in 1995, and the big, natural wooden blocks which my students and I would use to make all sorts of constructions and stories – from secret hideouts to impenetrable castles, from mysterious space stations to bustling airports.

While doing some research on the importance of play in the preschool setting, I came across this article written by Gwen Dewar in Parenting Science.

After reading it, I felt compelled to share it with my teachers and parents. I even asked my son’s teacher if he was having enough time in the Blocks Area. At home, I dusted our bucket of table blocks and let my children play. Fifteen seconds into it, and I was on the floor with them, laughing as my one-year-old knocked her towers down and coaxing my son to help me make a maze for his imaginary block family to walk through.

Maybe in a few years, I will learn that they have good spatial skills, are great at math, can solve problems in more ways than one, are socially-savvy and articulate. Then again, even if they don’t have any of these things, we will have one thing – lots of great memories of blocked time playing together.
